I found these shots from a trip to Disneyland last summer. My favorite thing about these pictures is that the ice cream is almost bigger than my daughter. Hilarious. But I'm sharing them because they are good examples of what the flash can do for outdoor shots. These were in a shaded area. No harsh shadows but the light seemed flat and boring.
And then, the FLASH and look at that, something a little more vibrant and interesting perhaps?
What do you think??

Great! I love the difference in the two photos - and hey, your daughter is adorable!

The flash makes such a difference in her face, which is of course, the most important part! I tend to use the flash more depending on my child. My little boy has a darker complexion than my girl and sometimes if I photographing them together, her face comes out "enlightened" while his just looks very white compared to the rest of him. Does that make sense? So I usually cheat by not using the flash so much, but then editing flash in when I need it by using my photo program on my pc. Is that cheating???

Great shots! I'm particularly impressed with how clean her white shirt is, even after an ice cream like that!
I was in Africa last year, and I took alot of photos, but I found it particularly tricky in the bright sun to take decent pictures of people with such dark skin. Alot of times, the faces just got lost in the shadows. Fortunately, I had a fairly powerful flash that helped compensate.

Great shots Trace, I love how big the ice cream is too. Good example of flash. I'm buying that camera.
